Back Pain Tips You Can Use Print E-mail
Imagine that every movement you make, and practically every breath you take, causes searing pain to radiate throughout your body.  That's what it's like to suffer with severe back pain.

In 2002 a study showed back pain to be one of the leading reasons that people miss work and visit the clinic.  In fact, back pain is the second most common neurological ailment in the United States, next to headaches.

For most people, back pain is a symptom of an injury or other underlying problem related to your spine.  The bones, muscles and other soft tissues in the back can all contribute to back pain.

When back pain strikes, it can affect your ability to work, take part in recreational activities, and simply lead a normal lifestyle.  Fortunately, back pain does not often signal a very serious condition.  In fact, most cases of back pain are short term, lasting anywhere from a several days to a few weeks. There are also a number of treatment methods and remedies available, although there is no definitive method that will bring relief to every individual.

It's important to take steps to avoid activities that can lead to back pain, such as heavy lifting.  If you do suffer from back pain, here are some tips that can help you to find relief:

Give Your Back Some R and R

When your back is injured, the best way to find relief is by lying on your back, on the floor.  Bend your knees and hips slightly, and place pillows under your knees for support.  This position is helpful, as it takes the weight and pressure off of your back. You may choose to assume the same position, but with your feet propped up on a chair. First, lie with your back flat against the floor.  Use a pillow to support your head.  Then, bend your knees so that the backs of your legs are resting on a pillow placed on top of the seat of the chair.

With this type of rest, it can be possible to achieve back pain relief after a day or two.  If the pain does not stop, see a doctor.  Resting in this manner for more than two days may cause your muscles to weaken, leading to even longer recovery period.

Turn Up the Heat

Mother always did know best, and while researchers haven't provided any proof of medical benefit, many people still swear by a simple hot compress.  Heating pads deliver a relaxing effect on muscle spasms, which can be the leading contributors to back pain.

The best way to find relief using a heating pad is to place the pad over the painful section of your back, and then leave it in place for 20 to 30 minutes.  Ice packs may also be used in this same manner.  A massage following the hot or cold pack treatment is especially beneficial.

Medications

Those seeking fast-acting relief may still choose to turn to medications.  Most drugstores carry non-prescription medications to reduce pain and swelling and provide welcome back pain relief for sufferers. These over-the-counter remedies include aspirin, acetaminophen (Tylenol), ketoprofen (Orudis), naproxen (Aleve), and ibuprofen (Motrin).

If you are one of the millions of people who are missing work and play due to back pain, it's time to take your life back.   Try one of these back pain relief methods, or ask your doctor for other treatment options.
